In addition to his route ownership, Mike and another FedEx contractor own a repair shop for large trucks.
He smiles through the weariness that comes from a long commute, workdays that top 12 hours and the stress of running a business. In a few years, Mike said, he wants to retire and turn his business over to Jeff and another son, Tyler Derryberry, 30, who just bought his own route in the Hutchins terminal. Mike said he wants to spend time with his five granddaughters and grandson, work on his acre property and hopefully travel to Yosemite National Park and the Grand Canyon.
Jeff is happy to keep the business in the family after Mike retires. He says moving from a job as a mortgage broker with Chase to his contract business with FedEx — right before the recession hit, no less — was the best career choice he ever made. One of the perks is working with his dad. Despite the stress, Mike said, he enjoys working with FedEx, even on his birthday.
The relationships with his drivers, FedEx employees, other contractors and the customers make it worth it, he says.
