However, starting in season four, it seemed as though the writers became desperate to include "deep" issues into every other episode, and the show became less a musical comedy and more a lazy after school special. Among the plots that the show included and didn't handle properly are Quinn's accident , Marley's eating disorder, Sue's motherhood, the racism that several characters endured, the school shooting that came out of nowhere, and pretty much everything concerning Ryder, from his dyslexia to the whole catfish situation.
Pretty much all the kids introduced in season four fit into this category. Many fans felt that they are not fully-fledged, three-dimensional characters, but rather ideas that the writers never truly developed. Besides being shy and having an eating disorder, Marley's never given any real role.
Jake is just another Puck, and even when he actually shows some growth, the writers strip him of it when a new conflict was necessary. The show's guest stars also got the short end of the stick. Kate Hudson's Cassandra July was just mean towards Rachel until she wasn't because it turns out she was always secretly a fan of her talent. These actors deserve better. Glee was famous for its tribute episodes.
After Madonna lent the rights to her entire music catalog, it seemed every artist wanted to get the Glee treatment. Britney Spears got her own tribute episode in season two, and while there was another episode devoted to her music, it can't be considered a tribute.
The show literally makes fun of Spears' breakdown by having the character of Brittany re-enact scenes from the singer's darkest period. Brittany lip-syncs on stage, attacks school reporter Jacob Ben Israel with an umbrella, and suffers a mental breakdown that culminates in her confessing that she staged the whole thing to have a more effective comeback. The episode mocks Spears' struggles and it ranks as one of the lowest things the show ever did.
Audiences have caught on to how immature and borderline creepy the character of Will Schuester is, but he is hardly the only adult to behave uncomfortably. In November of last year, Melissa Benoist, who played Marley Rose on the show, revealed that she had been the victim of intimate partner violence. While Benoist never explicitly named her abuser, the timeline of her relationship with Glee co-star Blake Jenner appears to indicate that they were married at the time of the incident Benoist regaled.
In the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, protests have sprung up nationwide, with more and more celebrities using their platform to voice support. This includes Rachel Berry herself, Lea Michele. The show has become shrouded in sadness and anger, and rumors of even more unsavory behavior from other cast members. Of course, people change. And hopefully, they grow.

Say what you want about Glee, but it truly is a life changing show that many teens will enjoy. So first let's start off with the whole idea of the show in general.
It's about a bunch of completely different kids who join their high school glee club and soon see that they may not be so different after all. From an annoying, ambitious show girl, to a mean cheerleader, having something in common seems like quite a stretch, but that's not the case here.
One thing that all these kids have in common is their love for music. Let me just start off by saying that everyone in the show is super talented. The vocals of the characters are absolutely amazing! Along with that, the show teaches good lessons, and portrays real life situations.
Let's start with some of the important lessons Glee teaches us: First off, Glee has a common theme of Acceptance. This is a big one and it has always been a key subject throughout the show. They portray the type of environment where it does not matter if you're black, white, gay, straight, popular, an outcast, super smart, or average, etc. All that mattered to them is that they were a family, and family accepts you for who you are.
Next, Perseverance. Many of the characters overcame many obstacles that came their way. One of the main characters, Kurt Hummel, was bullied horribly at school.
The bullies would call him hurtful slurs and push him into lockers just because of his sexual orientation. It got so bad that he had to move schools. One of the bullies threatened to kill him. A few seasons later he was the subject of a hate crime and was horribly beat up and hospitalized. You know what he did after all this?
He stood up for himself, he stood up for others, he became a stronger person from this all and that is something many people need to see. There are other characters who show perseverance too, but let's move on for now. Next is parent communication. Many teens do not talk to their parents about important issues and Glee shows that it's okay to do that. Another one is to follow your dreams. Rachel Berry, known as the main character of the show, portrays this the most.
She kept trying and trying, and say what you want about Rachel but she had just the right ambition and she was very determined. She worked very hard for her dream to come true, and it did at the end. She never stopped believing that she could do it. Next is, don't let others define you. Brittany S. Pierce was called stupid all her life, and yes there were some moments where we all questioned her. She was nit the brightest in the beginning, but she turned out to be a genius.
She became a mathematician, as stated in a later season. She didn't listen to what others said about her. She kept telling herself that she was smart and with the help of others, she realized she was a true genius.
Another one is that there's always tomorrow. Just because today sucked doesn't mean tomorrow will. Last but not least, don't let your past define you. People make mistakes, and those little mistakes you make don't define you. Here are some quotes from the show before I move on: 1 It's what I love to do. It's never going to be a waste of time. The show is super inspirational and heartwarming. It's also very funny and just overall great.
Let's talk about the music now! Glee has some very amazing musical numbers, some of the songs they sing are even better than the originals! The singers are truly amazing, so talented! I really enjoy watching all the performances, they can range from being fun and upbeat, to sad, to heartwarming, to romantic.
Glee let's your teens discover new music, and artists. The show plays a lot of oldies! They had two whole episodes dedicated to The Beatles, where the only sang Beatles songs throughout the episodes! They also sang many musical songs, which is so fun! Let's move onto the relationships! Glee portrays a of different relationships and I'm all here for it. First off: Romantic relationships. What I really respect about Glee is that the relationships don't rely on sex, a lot of the couples really loved each other.
There were some very romantic scenes throughout the show, whether the romance was expressed through song, or normally, it was adorable. It is even hardly recognisable. I agree with you on Sam, that poor boy has to do alot of stuff to get a girlfriend, but getting moronic just to get to Britt's level is just THAT is something fresh and new, atleast. Can only hope they continue with it later. Personally I love it no matter what, but they're moments that I do hate, the only problem I have is continiuty but that's been a problem since season 2.
While I don't agree with some of the specifics of this post, I very much agree with the overall message-- Glee has just lost it's way somewhere. Marley and Kitty's problem, as you mentioned, are the biggest standouts.
They're so one-dimensional it's just plain sad. I can't root for Marley because there is nothing to her but sweetness and tolerance and naivete and oh-so-sad manipulated Marley with a wonderful voice that we should love and think the world of. And then there's Kitty, who is my favorite newbie except for the fact that she seems to have no purpose but as you said to further our love for Marley.
Quinn-- well Quinn seems to regress every season. As I've mentioned before, the writers seem to be unable to write Quinn as retaining any of her growth from previous seasons, so they just pull her back to S1 and start over with a new crazy plotline. Ryder I actually think is a Gary Stu, simply because I haven't seen a single person not fall in love with his funny, sweet, humble, decent-voiced self. I think Ryan just realized halway into his "revolutionary idea" that he had too many characters to develop and not enough time to develop them, so instead he just introduced the old ones with major personality jumps ie Tina and made the new ones slightly altered clones of the ones that just left; and since then he's just been recycling storylines.
I don't know-- it's just becoming a giant mess, and RM's stretched so thin with his two other shows, I just don't know what the hell is happening. I'm willing to think that next season, the New York storyline will be gone and all the storylines will be focused on Lima, Ohio. What I think, there should be a spin-off set in New York. I like that you noticed not one strong female character this year!!!
I see exactly that and I also see Glee's straight crowd sleezing in more so then usual Hey Im not saying straight isnt okay but selling out is sad!
Especially since this show used the gays in season 1 Kurt and toyed with Santana and Brittany, make no mistake Glee USED those three characters to draw a crowd and whatta a crowd they got! Along with three strong fan bases that have remained loyal I dont know any other show that has that sort of commitment from their fans, they scored and didnt even really try Season 3 full blown 3 powerhouse strong fanbase couples Finchel Klaine and Brittana..
Talk about a melting pot!!! Rachel having sex and a live in BF not even 6 months into the season! Sam and Brittnay outta nowhere all of a sudden soul mates???
Where's the gay coupling? I will tell ya!
