My advice - get 2 layers of shields and 2 power in engines ASAP. You don't need any other upgrades to your ship in the first couple of sectors. Save your scrap. Don't buy anything in the first two sectors unless you have some useless stuff to sell well if the RNG God loves you and you find weapon preigniter, it's OK to buy it. That's the basic rules I follow every time and in 10 runs I win in times mostly depending on the ship, for example with Federation C or Engi B in 10 runs I'm glad when I win 1 time.
That all seems like very solid advice : And some of it I definetly know. I always hang around as long as possible in a sector meticulously counting how many more jumps I can fit in and just miss the rebel advancement. I don't spend ridiculous scrap.
But I try to go for a 3 3 2 stratergy, when possible, getting the max out of the energy and having 3 good weapons. A quick point on the trying not to take damage, I get this, and this is what I think I end up spending most of my money on, however I have at times found myself physically incapable of winning a fight. So when an enemy pops up with 3 sheilds I, power down the weapons, full power the engines and scoot on out of there as quick as possible, still taking a little bit of damage.
My problem with this is, I need to win fights to get the scrap to buy the weapons the win the fights. Also pushing my forward to a harder sector. Or I'll cloack just after a missile shot. I've stopped using autofire a long time ago lol that thing isn't as helpful as it first appears. I try and get rock men or mantis for boarding, and I try not to have one or the other, I find having a rock man and a mantis boarding means you have to fetch the rock man back when he still has plenty of health, Im sure I could do a lot more to help this, maybe have my mantis run around while he continues I dunno Don't get me wrong I'm not disheartened and Im still playing and loving FTL, I'm just discussing tactics and stealing yours : I'd love to watch or do a broadcast and chat about stuff.
Has anyone tried it yet? One other point - I know this is completely my fault. I was doing great had everything I wanted, defense drone, think I even had a combat 2, good mix of weapons, hull repair drone in the cargo for inbetween flagship jumps, hacking Got to sector 6 and 7, jumping round trying to be tight with my missiles and drone bits, building them up for the flagship - nearly all my fights gave me scrap and fuel.
Ended up in a stalemate. Obviously on easy, you dont have to buy missiles and drone bits because they are given to you in the millions. Is it normal on normal to have to stock up at stores? I personally never rely on missile based weapons late game. If I have weapons power which alone can wreck the flagship and I find in a store a small bomb, breach I or II, or ion bomb, maybe I will buy it, but only if I have extra scrap and a plenty of missiles.
Last edited by xenxander ; 22 Feb, am. Drone recovery arm? Meh, maybe But repair arm and stealth weapons? You're joking right? If one is using offensive drones with any other ships, then he's not doing it right.
But generally speaking, the drone recovery arm is cool augment and is not as useless as: 2 The repair arm? You will waste your scrap on repair arm? I can't believe this. But sadly I lose scrap on every encounter until I reach the first store. And in those wins with cloak, I had stealth weapons exactly 2 times - the first time I won it in some event in the end of sector 7 and there was no store to sold it but that run I had the vulcan so yeah it was usefull.
The second time I bought it but only because I had tons of scrap and there was no other cool stuff. The majority of my wins are without cloak. That extra is well appreciated. I've already said stealth is good, don't misunderstand me. I'm saying you do not need it or have to rely on it to win. I read posts by people saying 'you HAVE to have stealth' for the flagship and this just isn't true.
There is a warning exactly 5 seconds beforehand. If any of your crew are on board when the Zoltan shield comes back on, they will be stuck and can't be teleported back until the shield is broken again unless you have Zoltan Shield Bypass. After this long struggle, the victory screen appears.
It has the name of your ship as well as the names of every crew member that survived the encounter excluding those who were on board the Flagship when it was destroyed in the final phase if you do not have a Clone Bay.
If your ship is destroyed at the same time you destroy the Flagship, it will count as Victory as well. You will also have the words "Victory" if your ship is a new high score.
The Flagship weapons are artillery systems, working just like the Federation Cruiser artillery system, but with different base charge times. Damaging the system slows down the weapon. In phase 1 and 2, they have 3 system levels. In phase 3, they have 4 levels. The Flagship has high damage output, especially in phases 2 and 3. Good defences will make the fight much safer:.
Consider damage buffers to other critical systems too upgrading them one extra bar, for resilience against a single hit. Good candidates are shields, cloaking, mind control, and weapons. Strong offence is equally useful. Ending the fight quickly will limit the damage you take. Look for some of the following:. The Zoltan Shield in phase 3 has 12 hit points. It can be taken down more quickly with ion or beam weapons, or combat or beam drones.
Zoltan Shield Bypass can be useful when boarding. Your offence should not rely heavily on missile weapons, since the defence drone in phase 2 will shoot them down unless you have a Defense Scrambler. It cannot stop you using hacking , however. With a good setup and strategy, it's possible to defeat the Flagship while taking no damage.
Always have a plan for the Flagship, and upgrade your ship accordingly. As you get closer to the end of the game, imagine how your current ship will handle the final battles. Are your defences adequate? Do you plan to kill the crew slowly in phase 1, or will you use powerful weapons to end the fight quickly? Try to enter the Flagship fight in good shape. You get 10 free repairs upon entering sector 8, and Repair Beacons can patch up your hull for free.
Your ship should not be taking much damage from regular fights in sector 8. In all phases, the Flagship's missiles are a major threat, so have a plan for dealing with them. Your plan could be as simple as "use weapons to destroy the missiles"! The other weapons are much less dangerous, but can be deadly when they sync up with the power surges. Cloaking can be used to dodge the missiles or power surge attacks. The timing of power surges varies, and cloaking will not always be ready for dodging the next one.
Unlike the Flagship weapons, power surges are not delayed by cloaking, so it's often desirable to end your cloak immediately after the surge. This can be done using a level 1 cloak, or firing your non-beam weapons to disrupt a longer cloak. Higher-level cloaking can also be used to dodge both the missiles and a power surge.
For example, in phase 3, a level 3 cloak can dodge the first missile volley and power surge example , while also delaying the next missile volley by 15 seconds. This is not guaranteed, due to the variable surge timing. With good defences, the missiles are often more dangerous than the power surges. Phase 1 will use level 3 hacking against you. This can range from trivial to deadly, depending on which system it hacks. The system is randomised each time, so it may be wise to jump away if the Flagship hacks a critical system.
Do not jump away if you only have 1 turn remaining before the Flagship destroys the base! The worst hack targets are usually weapons or shields. Beware using a defence drone to shoot down the hack; this rarely stops all the hacking drones, but it does change the hack timing. If you allow the hack to land immediately, then a shields hack will end before the Flagship can fire its laser or beam weapons. Perhaps more importantly, an immediate weapons hack will mostly overlap with the Flagship's second cloak.
Delaying the hack changes this timing, with the result that you may be prevented from ever firing your weapons! You will not encounter this elsewhere in the game, since no other enemies have both hacking and cloaking. It's sometimes possible to use a defence drone to selectively block hacks. You can watch where the drone is aiming, and then unpower if it looks like the hack is heading for an unimportant system.
This could result in a delayed weapons or shields hack, however! You can use a defense drone to shoot down the Boarding Drone. Otherwise, it can be helpful to open internal doors and power your oxygen system to level 2: this will keep oxygen in the room, so your crew can fight it more easily.
OK, now if you can, kill the crew inside the main hull. This will be hard using traditional methods. However, I found a neat trick. Mind control one of the enemy crew and then teleport him onto your ship to finish him off! Do this for all the crew except that one gunner. It takes a few minutes, but it's the easiest way to kill them.
Lastly, teleport your crew over to destroy the enemy shields. One they are down, you can easily destroy the ship with your weapons. And you never even hade to shoot once until now : 7. With any scrap you gained, I would upgrade your door systems to slow down enemy boarding parties in the next phase. Boss Phase 2 Repeat what you did in phase one: destroy the missile and red laser beam gun but not the main gunner.
This phase will be harder because enemy drones will board your ship. Therefore, once the missle and laser beam is destroyed, teleport and destroy the drone control to stop the enemy boarding drone from attacking. If you can cloak, do it before the drone power surges indicated by a warning siren.
Lastly destroy the shields with your crew just like before. Boss Phase 3 Do exactly what youd did for the last two phases; destroy the missiles. However, the boss now has a Zoltan shield. Do whatever you can to take out its shields to get your boarding crew over unless you have Zoltan shield bypass. You will notice that one of your crew members will be mind controlled. This is another reason mind control is essential, you can cancel enemy mind control with your own.
Otherwise, good luck without a mind control counter! Once the missiles are destroyed, send your crew to take out the mind control center and finally the shields again. Try to cloak during the enemy's super weapon shot. After that the flagship will be destroyed! When I was starting out, the following video really helped a lot. As you can see, it is very similar to my guide here, so check it out! I I would rather not use crew teleport. Instead, opt in for hacking. Hacking, mind control, and cloak are better than crew teleport or drone control.
Hacking on most ships lock the doors to a room. This is great, over all. Then mind control, in the locked room, gives you a chance to knock down the room to orange. Also, enemies can't get into the room, easily. Dropping bombs, or hitting say another system, will draw off enemies. Also, keeping one pip on oxygen can mean your crew lives through the encounter, even with a cloning bays.
In all but doors and scanners, Zoltans are better. Shields, engines, and weapons. That additional point of energy means you can pump your engines a bit, while using heavier weapons. And don't be afraid to have a mix of weapons.
I am not dead 27 Jan, am. Just beat the flagship, with no hull repair. Lanius A, almost entire ship depresurizes. Double Combat I drones and double halberd beam with flak 1. Easy win, just shreded all ships. No boarding or mind control, so point is there are multiple ways to beat it. Good guide for this strat though.
Another thing that works well is to have ion bombs or something to get shields down by two, a burst laser and then just Glaive beam. If you beam aboard and destroy drone control you can hack shields for phase 1 and 2 and then just deal tons of damage with glaive beam.
In phase three be defensive, have a big boarding party, and also you should have killed a lot of thier crew already.
